SE Ranking Keyword Research Alternative: SE Ranking Keyword Tool, Volume Checker and Keyword Grouper Compared
SE Ranking keyword research is good, and it is not cheap. The module lives inside the Core plan at $129 a month, and there is no lower tier that carries it since SE Ranking deleted the $65 Essential plan. There is one number US buyers should see before subscribing that the marketing page prints without comment: SE Ranking sizes its keyword database by region, and North America holds 1.2 billion keywords against 3.2 billion for Europe. Below is what the SE Ranking Keyword Tool measures, what it costs, what the Keyword Grouper does and does not do, and where the honest swaps are.

Keywordpilot is an independent keyword research tool. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or a reseller of SE Ranking, Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz or Ubersuggest, and those names are their owners' trademarks. Every figure below was read off seranking.com in August 2026 and cross checked in USD.
▸ The number that matters if you sell in the United States
SE Ranking’s North America keyword database is about a third the size of its European one
Most vendors quote one headline database figure. SE Ranking splits it by region on its own keyword research page, and the split is worth ten seconds of your attention. Europe is 3.2 billion keywords. North America is 1.2 billion. Asia is 545 million. Nobody hides this, but nobody frames it either, and a US business reading "unique database that delivers keyword suggestions for any market" would reasonably assume the coverage is even. It is not. That is not a reason to avoid the tool. SE Ranking is a European company and its European coverage is a genuine strength that Ahrefs and Semrush do not automatically beat. It is a reason to test your own long tail terms during the 14 day trial rather than assume depth you have not checked.
| Region | Keywords in the database | Share of the three published figures | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Europe | 3.2 billion | about 65 percent | The deepest part of the index, and the reason SE Ranking is worth a look for multi country European SEO. |
| North America | 1.2 billion | about 24 percent | The figure that applies to United States research. Large in absolute terms, smaller than the headline suggests. |
| Asia | 545 million | about 11 percent | Thinnest of the three. Check your terms before committing if this is your market. |
Percentages are our arithmetic on the three published regional figures, not an SE Ranking statistic, and the three do not claim to be the whole index. Whole platform pricing, plan limits and what the 2026 restructure changed sit on the SE Ranking pricing breakdown.
▸ Seven columns, and you act on three
What the SE Ranking keyword tool actually measures
SE Ranking brands this module in three different ways across its own site, as the Keyword Tool, the Keyword Suggestion Tool and the Keyword Generator. They are the same screen. Here is what comes back per term, and which of it changes a decision.
Search volume
Monthly searches in the country you selected, with the previous year plotted underneath so you can see whether a term is growing or dying before you build a page for it.
Global volume
The same keyword totalled across countries, broken out by country with a percentage share. Useful for deciding whether a page should target one market or several.
Keyword difficulty
A 0 to 100 organic difficulty score with a written label attached, so 61 arrives as "not easy" rather than as a naked number. Comparable inside SE Ranking only, never against an Ahrefs or Moz score.
Search intent
An informational, navigational, commercial or transactional label. This is the column that decides whether a keyword belongs on a landing page or on a blog post, and it arrives one term at a time.
CPC and competition
Average cost per click in USD and a paid competition score from 0 to 1. Present because the same keyword list feeds paid search, not because it tells you much about organic difficulty.
Keyword ideas by category
Suggestions split into similar, related, question based and low search volume sets, rather than returned as one undifferentiated list. The question based set is the useful one.
The module also carries a SERP overview, local keywords and a competitor keyword view that lists the terms driving traffic to a rival domain. That competitor view overlaps almost exactly with what our competitor keyword analysis does, and if all you want is the difficulty read without a subscription, that is the keyword difficulty checker.
▸ The claim worth understanding before you trust a number
SE Ranking’s keyword volume checker claims ungrouped, exact volumes rather than ranges
In its own comparison against Google Keyword Planner, SE Ranking states that plurals, superlatives and possessives are treated as separate entities with exact search volumes rather than as a volume range. That is a direct swipe at Keyword Planner, and it is a fair one. Keyword Planner reports rounded twelve month averages in broad buckets unless you have live ad spend, and it groups close variants together, which is why "keyword tool" and "keyword tools" can come back as one figure there and as two here.
Read the claim precisely, though. Ungrouped is not the same as exact in the sense a buyer hears it. Every third party tool, SE Ranking included, models Keyword Planner data plus clickstream inputs, and Ahrefs says plainly in its own documentation that search volume in any SEO tool is always an estimation because only Google has the real figures. What SE Ranking is promising is that it will not merge two terms into one row, which genuinely matters when you are choosing between a singular and a plural for a page title. It is not promising that the number is right to the search. Compare keywords inside one tool, never across two.
How far any vendor volume figure can be trusted, and where the data actually comes from, is unpacked in how accurate keyword search volume is, and pulling volume for a list you already have is the search volume checker.
▸ What the module costs, and the tier that no longer exists
$129 a month is the cheapest way into SE Ranking keyword research
There is no budget door into this module any more. Until the 2026 restructure, Essential at $65 was the entry plan. SE Ranking deleted it, renamed Pro to Core and raised it from $119 to $129. Per tier the price rose about 8 percent, which sounds mild, but for anyone who had been paying $65 the entry price effectively doubled. That is the change behind the complaints, and it is why people arrive on this page.
| SE Ranking plan | Per month | Paid yearly | Keyword research | Keywords tracked daily | API credits | Projects |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential (deleted 2026) | $65 | n/a | Was the cheap way in. No longer sold. | n/a | n/a | n/a |
| Core | $129 | $103.20 | Included | 2,000 | 25,000 | 10 |
| Growth | $279 | $223.20 | Included | 5,000 | 100,000 | 30 |
| Enterprise | quoted | quoted | Included | quoted | quoted | quoted |
The 20 percent annual discount is paid upfront and SE Ranking states it is non refundable, so treat the annual figure as a year of committed cash rather than a monthly rate. The trial is genuinely 14 days with no credit card, which is rarer than it should be: Ahrefs offers no free trial at all, and Semrush asks for a card for its 7 day one.
▸ Priced honestly, including where SE Ranking wins
SE Ranking keyword research alternatives compared
| Tool | Entry price with keyword research | Replaces the SE Ranking Keyword Tool for | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs | $29 per month for Starter | A much larger keyword index, and Keywords Explorer is on every paid tier including the cheapest one. | Starter caps every report at 250 rows and lists export rows per month as None, and Ahrefs runs no free trial. |
| Semrush | $139.95 per month for Pro | Deeper paid search data, 10,000 results per report and 3,000 reports a day rather than a single seat workflow. | Costs more than SE Ranking Core, tracks 500 keywords against 2,000, and allows 5 projects against 10. |
| Moz Pro | $99 per month for Standard | Domain Authority and the minimum DA holding a first page slot, which SE Ranking has no equivalent for. | Standard meters you at 150 keyword queries a month, about 5 lookups a day, and caps saved lists at 500 keywords. |
| Ubersuggest | $29 per month | Straight lookups at a fifth of the price, with a lifetime option that pays back in 10 months. | Smaller dataset, no daily rank tracking at SE Ranking scale, and published limits above the entry tier are disputed. |
| Google Keyword Planner | Free with an active Ads account | Volume from Google itself, which is the source every vendor on this list models from. | Broad buckets without live ad spend, groups close variants, and scores nothing at all for organic difficulty. |
| Keywordpilot | Founding pricing from $39 per month | The lookup plus the step after it: terms come back grouped by intent with a publish order already attached. | Early access, no backlink index, no daily rank tracking, and we do not pretend otherwise. |
Worth naming plainly, because the table hides it: SE Ranking is the most expensive entry point on this list and it also tracks four times more keywords daily than Semrush Pro across twice the projects. It is not overpriced, it is priced for agencies running many sites. If you run one site, you are paying for a shape you will not fill. The module level teardowns of the rivals live on our Ahrefs Keywords Explorer alternative, Semrush Keyword Magic Tool alternative and Moz Keyword Explorer alternative pages, and every option in the category is scored on the best keyword research tools roundup.
▸ The feature closest to what we do
The SE Ranking Keyword Grouper sorts a list you already built
SE Ranking ships a Keyword Grouper, and it is the part of the platform nearest to the job Keywordpilot exists for, so it deserves a fair description rather than a dismissal. You paste in a list of keywords, pick how strict the grouping should be, and it clusters them by how much the ranking pages overlap between terms. SERP overlap is the right signal. Two keywords that return the same results are one page, and no amount of reading the words tells you that as reliably as the results do.
Stay on SE Ranking if you…
- run 10 or more client sites and need 2,000 daily tracked keywords in the same bill
- target European markets, where the 3.2 billion keyword index is a genuine edge
- want audits, backlinks, rank tracking and research in one subscription
- need the API, where 25,000 credits on Core is a serious allowance
Replace it if you…
- run one US site and are paying $1,548 a year for an agency shaped plan
- were on the $65 Essential plan and will not pay double for the same module
- have to build the list first before the grouper will do any keyword clustering at all
- want a sequenced content plan out of research, not a sorted spreadsheet
▸ Where Keywordpilot fits
We start where the grouper needs you to finish
The gap is the input. SE Ranking’s grouper is excellent at sorting a list, and it requires you to have a list, which means running seed terms through the Keyword Tool one at a time, exporting, deduplicating and pasting. Then you get groups, and you still decide which group deserves a page, which order to publish in and what each page has to say. Keywordpilot takes the seed term and returns that finished decision. It is a narrower product than SE Ranking and it costs about a third as much, which is the trade being offered.
One seed in
Type the term you would have typed into the SE Ranking Keyword Tool. No list to assemble first, and no export step before the grouping happens.
Clusters out
Terms come back already grouped by search intent, so the intent label applies across the set rather than arriving one keyword at a time.
Difficulty bands
Each cluster carries a winnability read, so the SERPs a site your size will not reach this year get dropped before you commit budget to them.
A publish order
The plan arrives sequenced with a brief per cluster. That is the deliverable the research and the grouping were always a means to.
Checking a batch of terms in one pass rather than one lookup at a time is the bulk keyword research job, and how SE Ranking stacks up against Semrush across the whole platform is covered in SE Ranking vs Semrush.

SE Ranking keyword research questions
What is the SE Ranking Keyword Tool?
The SE Ranking Keyword Tool is the keyword research module inside SE Ranking. You enter one term and a country and it returns search volume, global volume, keyword difficulty scored 0 to 100, search intent, CPC, paid competition and a volume history chart, plus keyword ideas grouped into similar, related, question based and low volume sets.
Is SE Ranking keyword research free?
No. Keyword research sits inside a paid SE Ranking subscription, and the entry plan carrying it is Core at $129 a month. SE Ranking does offer a 14 day free trial with no credit card required, which is more generous than most rivals in this category, but it is a trial rather than a free tier and it ends.
How much does SE Ranking keyword research cost?
Keyword research comes with Core at $129 a month, or $103.20 a month billed annually at a 20 percent discount paid upfront. The Growth plan is $279 monthly and $223.20 annually. There is no cheaper tier that includes it, because SE Ranking deleted its $65 Essential plan during the 2026 restructure.
How big is the SE Ranking keyword database?
SE Ranking publishes its database by region rather than as one total: 3.2 billion keywords for Europe, 1.2 billion for North America and 545 million for Asia. If you are researching United States search, the number that applies to you is the 1.2 billion North America figure, which is roughly a third of the European database.
Does SE Ranking have a keyword difficulty checker?
Yes. Every keyword returns a difficulty score from 0 to 100 with a plain language label next to it, so a score of 61 renders as "not easy" rather than as a bare number. The score estimates how hard the first page of organic results will be to reach, and like every vendor difficulty metric it is only comparable inside SE Ranking.
What is the SE Ranking Keyword Grouper?
The Keyword Grouper takes a list you already have and sorts it into groups by how much the ranking results overlap between terms. It is a clustering step applied after research rather than during it, so you still supply the list, choose the grouping strictness and decide afterwards which group belongs on which page.
Does SE Ranking have a keyword research API?
Yes. SE Ranking sells a Keyword Research API that returns search volume, CPC, competition, keyword difficulty and search volume history as JSON. API credits are metered separately from the interface, at 25,000 on Core and 100,000 on Growth, and SE Ranking also sells an API add on at $39 a month.
What is the best SE Ranking keyword research alternative?
It depends on which part pushed you out. If $129 a month is the problem, Ahrefs Starter at $29 and Ubersuggest at $29 both cost less, though both trade the price for hard row and export caps. If the problem is that grouping and sequencing the list is still your job after the export, the answer is a tool that does that step rather than one that returns more rows.
