Moz Keyword Explorer Alternative: Pricing, Query Limits and the Moz Keyword Tool Compared
Moz Keyword Explorer is not gated by price the way some competing modules are. Every Moz Pro plan opens it, starting at $99 a month. The gate is a counter. Standard includes 150 keyword queries per month, which is about 5 lookups a day, and your keyword lists cap at 5 lists of 100 terms. Go one tier up to Medium at $179 and the same counter reads 5,000. That is the cliff people hit two weeks into a subscription, and it is why this search exists. Below are the real per plan numbers, what the module measures, what the honest alternatives cost, and the case where staying on Moz is the right call.

▸ The limit nobody reads before subscribing
The $99 plan gives you 150 keyword queries a month, or 5 a day
This is the number that sends people looking for a Moz Keyword Explorer alternative, and it is easy to miss because the feature list says yes. Keyword Explorer is included on Standard. What Standard meters is how often you may use it. One hundred and fifty queries a month is a single research session for most people. Run a seed term, check twelve related ideas, look up eight competitor terms and you have spent a seventh of the month allowance in twenty minutes. The saved list ceiling bites at the same time: 5 lists holding 100 keywords each is 500 saved keywords for the life of the subscription.
| Moz Pro plan | Per month | Paid yearly | Keyword queries per month | Keyword lists | Keywords per list | Cost per query |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $99 | $79 | 150 | 5 | 100 | about $0.66 |
| Medium | $179 | $143 | 5,000 | 30 | 500 | about $0.036 |
| Large | $299 | $239 | 15,000 | 60 | 750 | about $0.020 |
Cost per query is our arithmetic on Moz published monthly prices and query allowances, not a Moz figure. It is worth doing because it exposes something the pricing page does not say out loud: the entry plan is roughly 18 times more expensive per keyword lookup than the tier directly above it. Moz also mentions an entry level plan at $49 a month for individuals managing a single website, offered below the three main cards rather than inside them. Whole platform pricing, including what each tier gives you outside keyword research, sits on the Moz Pro pricing breakdown.
▸ Six metrics, and you act on two
What the Moz keyword tool actually measures
Moz shows more per keyword than most competitors, and that is genuinely its strength. Knowing what each score is for tells you whether an alternative has to replace all six or just the two you use.
Monthly Volume
Estimated searches per month, shown as a range rather than a single figure. The range is the honest presentation, because no third party tool sees Google exact numbers.
Difficulty
How hard the first page looks, scored 0 to 100 from the authority of the pages already ranking. Moz Difficulty runs higher than the equivalent Ahrefs score, so never compare the two directly.
Organic CTR
The share of searches that still click an organic result after ads, snippets and AI answers take their cut. On many informational queries this is the number that kills the keyword.
Priority
Volume, Difficulty and Organic CTR blended into one 0 to 100 sort order. Useful for shortlisting a long list fast, less useful as a decision on its own.
Minimum Domain Authority
The weakest DA currently holding a first page slot. This is the most underrated number in the tool, because it answers whether a site like yours is even eligible.
Primary Search Intent
A Moz AI label for what the searcher wants. It is the piece that decides whether a keyword belongs on a landing page or a blog post, and it arrives one keyword at a time.
Moz states Keyword Explorer carries over 1.25 billion keyword suggestions and 180 million ranking keywords across 170 Google search engines. Dataset size is rarely the reason anyone switches, though. People switch on throughput. If you want the difficulty read without the query meter, that is what our keyword difficulty checker does, and how far to trust any vendor volume figure is unpacked in how accurate keyword search volume is.

Moz Keyword Explorer alternatives compared
| Tool | Entry price | Replaces Keyword Explorer for | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ubersuggest | $29 per month | Straight lookups at a third of the Moz price, without a 150 query ceiling on the entry plan. | Smaller dataset, no Domain Authority equivalent, and published limits above the entry tier are disputed. |
| Ahrefs | $29 per month for Starter | A far larger keyword index, and Keywords Explorer is on every paid tier including the cheapest. | Starter caps reports at 250 rows and sets export rows per month to None, so it swaps one ceiling for another. |
| Semrush | $139.95 per month | A bigger database plus paid search data Moz does not carry, and 10,000 results per report on Pro. | Costs more than Moz Medium, so it is not the answer if the $99 tier already felt expensive. |
| Google Keyword Planner | Free with an active Ads account | Volume ranges from Google itself, which is the source every other vendor models from. | Buckets volume into broad ranges without live ad spend, scores nothing for organic difficulty, and groups close variants. |
| Keywordpilot | Founding pricing from $39 per month | The lookup and the step after it: terms come back grouped by intent with a publish order attached. | Early access, no backlink index, no rank tracking, and we do not pretend otherwise. |
One pattern worth naming, because it is not a coincidence. The two cheapest keyword modules in this category both stop you at 500 saved keywords. Moz Standard allows 5 lists of 100. Ahrefs Starter allows 5 lists of 100. Different vendors, different pricing pages, identical ceiling, and in both cases you find it after you have paid. The module level teardown of the Ahrefs side is on our Ahrefs Keywords Explorer alternative page, and the Semrush equivalent is the Semrush Keyword Magic Tool alternative. If you are replacing the whole Moz platform rather than this one module, start at the Moz alternative comparison instead, and every option in the category is scored on the best keyword research tools roundup.
▸ The number that decides it
Standard to Medium costs 81 percent more and multiplies your queries by 33
Put the two tiers side by side and the upgrade stops being a judgement call. Standard is $99 a month for 150 keyword queries. Medium is $179 for 5,000. You pay 81 percent more and the counter goes up 33 fold, which tells you the 150 was never a costing decision. It is a shape designed to move you up a tier, and it works, because 150 is low enough that a single serious research week ends it. The honest question is not whether Medium is better value per query. It obviously is. The question is whether you need 5,000 lookups a month or whether you needed 300 and a way to do something with them.
Stay on Moz if you…
- use Domain Authority as your working authority metric and your clients expect it
- lean on Minimum Domain Authority to judge whether a SERP is reachable
- run site crawls, rank tracking and link research in the same subscription
- are already on Medium or Large, where the query counter never bites
Replace it if you…
- burn 150 queries in the first week and then wait for the reset
- are weighing $960 a year extra purely to raise a lookup counter
- keep hitting 5 lists of 100 and do the real keyword clustering in a spreadsheet
- want a content plan out of research rather than another export
▸ Where Keywordpilot fits
We remove the counter and the spreadsheet, not the link index
Keyword Explorer is a lookup tool, and it is a good one. What it hands back is one keyword with six numbers attached. The work that follows is grouping terms by intent, dropping the ones that will never convert, deciding which page owns which group and putting those groups in a publishing order. That step takes longer than the research, no extra queries make it faster, and Moz Primary Search Intent labels arrive one keyword at a time rather than across the set. Keywordpilot starts at the seed term and returns the finished version of that step.
One seed in
Type the term you would have typed into Keyword Explorer. No monthly query counter, and no waiting for the first of the month to research again.
Clusters out
Terms come back grouped by search intent instead of as one row at a time, so you can see which page should own which group before you write.
Difficulty bands
Each cluster carries a winnability read, so the SERPs a site your size will not touch this year get dropped before you commit, not after.
A publish order
The plan arrives sequenced with a brief per cluster. That is the deliverable 150 keyword lookups were always a means to.
Checking a batch of terms in one pass rather than one lookup at a time is the bulk keyword research job, and pulling volume for a list you already have is the search volume checker. How Moz Pro compares with Semrush across the whole platform is covered in Moz Pro vs Semrush.
▸ People also ask
Moz Keyword Explorer questions
What is Moz Keyword Explorer?
Moz Keyword Explorer is the keyword research module inside Moz Pro. You type a term and it returns Monthly Volume, Difficulty, Organic CTR and a Priority score, plus keyword suggestions and a SERP breakdown. Moz launched it in 2016 and states the tool carries over 1.25 billion keyword suggestions across 170 Google search engines.
Is Moz Keyword Explorer free?
There is a free preview on moz.com that runs without an account, but moz.com states a limit of 3 searches per day directly under the search button. It returns top suggestions, monthly volume, organic CTR and difficulty for one term at a time. Full access to lists, exports and the whole metric set requires a Moz Pro subscription.
How many keyword queries do you get with Moz Pro?
Moz Pro Standard at $99 a month includes 150 keyword queries per month, which works out to roughly 5 lookups a day. Medium at $179 includes 5,000 and Large at $299 includes 15,000. These figures are printed in the Compare Plan Details table on the Moz Pro pricing page, read in August 2026.
What does a Priority Score represent in the Moz Keyword Explorer?
Priority is a single 0 to 100 score that blends three of the other metrics: Monthly Volume, Difficulty and Organic CTR. A high Priority means a keyword has decent demand, beatable competition and a SERP where organic results still get clicked. It is a shortlisting device, so treat it as a sort order rather than a verdict.
What is the best Moz Keyword Explorer alternative?
It depends on which limit pushed you out. If 150 queries a month is the problem, almost anything with a higher ceiling fixes it, including Ubersuggest at $29. If the problem is that you export a keyword list and then spend an afternoon grouping it by hand, the answer is a tool that clusters and sequences the terms for you rather than one that just returns more rows.
Does Moz Keyword Explorer have an API?
Moz sells API access separately through the Moz API rather than bundling keyword lookups into the Moz Pro plan you use for Keyword Explorer. That is a distinct product with its own pricing and its own quota, so an API plan does not raise the 150, 5,000 or 15,000 keyword queries your Moz Pro tier allows in the interface.
Is there a Moz Keyword Explorer Chrome extension?
Moz ships MozBar, a Chrome extension that overlays Domain Authority, Page Authority and link metrics onto live search results. It is a SERP overlay rather than Keyword Explorer in a browser tab, so it will not spend or extend your monthly keyword queries. The keyword research module itself lives in the Moz Pro web app.
How accurate is Moz keyword search volume?
Moz reports volume as a range rather than a single hard number, which is more honest than it looks. Every third party tool models Google Keyword Planner data and no vendor sees Google exact figures. Compare keywords inside one tool and never across two, because a difference of 30 percent between tools usually says more about the model than the keyword.
