Keyword Research for Shopify: Shopify SEO Keywords for Collection, Product and Blog Pages

Shopify keyword research is a mapping problem more than a discovery problem. A store with 400 SKUs already has hundreds of URLs; the question is which keyword each one is supposed to win, and which pages are currently fighting each other for the same search. Type a category seed below and get the demand around it, scored for intent and difficulty, grouped into collection, product and blog pages.

▸ Which page type wins which keyword

A Shopify store has three page types and three kinds of demand

Get this assignment right and most of Shopify SEO takes care of itself. Get it wrong and you spend a quarter optimizing product descriptions for keywords a product page was never going to rank for.

Collection pages: category demand

Terms like "waterproof hiking boots" or "commercial coffee grinders". Broad, high volume, and the pages most stores leave with 40 words of text above a product grid. This is where the largest untapped ranking opportunity usually sits.

Product pages: model and attribute demand

Brand plus model, exact type plus attribute, compatibility and size queries. Lower volume individually, but the shopper typing them is one click from checkout, and there are hundreds of these terms across a catalog.

Blog pages: question and comparison demand

How to choose, X vs Y, sizing and care guides. They rarely convert on the visit, and they earn the links and topical coverage that make the collection pages rank, then hand traffic down through internal links.

The general version of this exercise, across any store platform, is on the keyword research for ecommerce page, and the page-by-page assignment method is in keyword mapping.

▸ How to do keyword research for a Shopify store

Five steps from catalog to keyword map

01

List your collections first

Export the collection structure and treat it as your topic list. Every collection is a bet that a group of shoppers searches for that category. Some of those bets are wrong, and the research will tell you which.

02

Expand each category into real shopper language

Merchants name collections the way the business thinks; shoppers search the way they talk. "Outerwear" is an internal label, "waterproof winter jackets" is a query. The expansion step closes that distance.

03

Split commercial from informational

Buying-intent terms go to collections and products. Question terms go to the blog. Sending a how-to query to a product page produces a bounce, and sending a buying query to a blog post produces a read with no sale.

04

Check difficulty against your store age

A store two years in with real links can reach for category head terms. A store launched in March cannot, and should own the specific attribute tail first. Difficulty scoring is what keeps that decision honest.

05

Assign one keyword group per URL

Write the map down: URL, primary keyword, variants. Large catalogs cannibalize themselves constantly because three similar products chase one term. The written map is what prevents it.

Stores with big catalogs usually run step two and four in one pass with bulk keyword research, then use the keyword clustering tool to produce the URL assignments in step five.

▸ Platform constraints to plan around

Four Shopify quirks that change the keyword plan

Fixed URL structure

Shopify puts /collections/ and /products/ in every path and you cannot remove them. It does not stop you ranking, but it does mean the handle carries all your keyword signal, so name handles for the search term rather than the internal product code.

Duplicate product URLs across collections

The same product is reachable at several paths depending on how a shopper navigated. Shopify canonicalizes to the /products/ URL, but link internally to the canonical form yourself so the signal does not scatter.

Thin collection pages by default

The stock template gives a grid and a title. Category keywords need content: what the category covers, how to choose, what the differences are. This single change moves more Shopify rankings than anything else on this page.

Variants competing with each other

Color and size variants that get their own pages, or near-identical products with near-identical descriptions, split rankings between themselves. Decide which URL owns the term and differentiate the rest deliberately.

The last one has a name and a fix: keyword cannibalization, which hits large catalogs harder than any other kind of site.

▸ Honest comparison

What Shopify merchants usually use

Option Strength for a store Where it falls short
Shopify SEO apps Handle titles, alt text and structured data inside the admin They optimize the fields, they do not tell you which keyword each page should target
Google Keyword Planner Volume from Google at no cost, useful for category demand Advertiser data with banded volumes, no SEO difficulty, no mapping to URLs
Ahrefs / Semrush Deep competitor data and rank tracking across a whole catalog Priced for teams; the mapping of keywords to hundreds of URLs stays manual
Keywordpilot Expands categories, scores intent and difficulty, clusters into per-URL assignments, from $39/mo founding pricing No rank tracking or backlink index; pair with Search Console for performance data

Shopify keyword research questions

How do I do keyword research for my Shopify store?

Start from the collection level, not the product level. Collection pages carry the category demand ("mens waterproof hiking boots") and are what most stores under-optimize, while product pages should target the specific model or brand plus model. Expand each category into the modifiers shoppers actually use, filter for buying intent, then map one keyword group to one URL.

What keywords should I use on Shopify product pages?

Use the specific terms a shopper types when they already know what they want: brand plus model, exact product type plus the distinguishing attribute, and size, material or compatibility qualifiers. Product pages rarely win broad category terms, and they do not need to. They win the narrow, high-intent searches that convert at several times the category rate.

Do Shopify collection pages rank better than product pages?

For category and comparison searches, yes, almost always. A collection page can carry internal links, sustained content and multiple products, which matches what Google shows for "best X" and "X for Y" style queries. Product pages win the model-specific tail. Trying to rank a single product for a category term is the most common Shopify SEO mistake.

How many keywords should a Shopify product page target?

One primary keyword plus its close variants, usually three to six phrasings that mean the same thing. Stores with large catalogs run into trouble when two similar products chase the same term and split the ranking, so decide which SKU owns which keyword before you write a single description.

Is Shopify good for SEO?

Yes, with known limits. Shopify handles the technical basics well: fast hosting, clean templates, automatic sitemaps and structured data for products. The constraints are the forced /collections/ and /products/ URL structure, duplicate product URLs across collections, and limited control over some canonical tags. None of those stop a store ranking; they just mean the keyword mapping has to be deliberate.

How do I find keywords my competitors rank for on Shopify?

Identify the three sites actually outranking you for your category terms, which are often a marketplace and a review site rather than a direct rival, then pull the keywords each ranks for and subtract your own coverage. What remains is your gap list. Filter it by buying intent before you plan anything, because most of a competitor export is traffic that will never buy.
