Content Gap Analysis: A Content Gap Analysis Tool That Finds the Topics You Have No Page For

A content gap analysis answers one question: what is the market searching for that your site has no answer to. The hard part was never finding the gaps, it was deciding which of the four hundred you found are worth a page this quarter. Type a seed topic below and Keywordpilot maps the demand around it, scores each term for difficulty and intent, and groups what is missing into pages you can assign.

▸ What counts as a gap

Three different gaps, and only one of them is about competitors

Most people run a competitor keyword export, call it a content gap analysis and stop. That finds one of three gaps. The other two usually contain the faster wins, because they involve demand you have already proven exists or pages you have already built.

Competitor gaps

Topics your rivals rank for and you have nothing on. The classic gap, and the one worth the most when the terms carry buying intent rather than encyclopedia traffic. Read the intent before you get excited about the volume.

Demand gaps

Queries the market searches that nobody covers well, including your competitors. These are the openings a smaller site can take outright, because the current top results are only ranking by default.

Coverage gaps on your own pages

Terms you already get impressions for at position 8 to 20, where the page exists but does not answer the query fully. Cheapest fixes on the list, because the ranking signal is already there and only the page needs work.

The third one is Search Console work, and the method is in Google Search Console keyword research. The first is closer to competitor keyword analysis, which goes deeper on picking the right rivals to study.

▸ How to run a content gap analysis

Six steps from export to publishing queue

01

Pick the right competitors

Not the companies you compete with commercially, the sites that outrank you for your money terms. Those are often a review site, a marketplace and one rival, and studying the wrong three is the most common way this analysis wastes a day.

02

Pull the demand around your topics

Expand each core topic into the full set of queries the market uses, including question forms and modifiers. This gives you the market map to measure your coverage against, instead of only the slice competitors happen to rank for.

03

Subtract what you already cover

Match your existing URLs to the query set. What survives is the raw gap list, and it will be far longer than you expect. This is where most analyses feel productive and then stall.

04

Filter on intent, not volume

Cut every gap whose searcher will never buy from you, however large. A 200-search query from someone comparing vendors beats a 20,000-search query from someone writing a school assignment, every time.

05

Score winnability

Check difficulty and read the live results for the survivors. A gap defended by four strong, current pages is not an opportunity this quarter. A gap where the top results are thin or dated is.

06

Cluster and assign

Group the remaining queries a single page could satisfy, assign one page per group, and decide new page or revision for each. The ordered list of those decisions is the actual deliverable.

Steps two, five and six are what the product automates: the keyword generator builds the market map, the keyword difficulty checker scores winnability, and the keyword clustering tool turns survivors into assigned pages.

▸ Reading the output

Which gaps to fill first

A finished gap list is usually two to four hundred rows, and the ordering decides whether the next quarter produces revenue or a lot of published words. This is the priority order that holds up across most US B2B and ecommerce sites we have looked at.

Priority Gap type Why it ranks here
1 Buying-intent terms you rank 8 to 20 for The page exists and Google already shows it. A revision, not a campaign, and the traffic converts.
2 Comparison and alternative terms with no page Highest commercial intent on the whole list. Someone choosing between vendors is one page away from a decision.
3 Use-case and segment terms competitors own Moderate volume, clear buyer, and usually defended by one generic page you can beat with a specific one.
4 Question terms around your product Lower direct conversion, but they feed the answer boxes and the AI assistants people now ask instead of searching.
5 High-volume head terms nobody in your class ranks for Last, and often never. Expensive to win, and the traffic is usually the wrong audience anyway.

▸ Honest comparison

Tools people use for content gap analysis

Tool Strength Where it falls short
Ahrefs Content Gap Largest competitor keyword index, compares several domains at once Output is a long flat export; grouping and prioritizing stay manual
Semrush Keyword Gap Clear four-way comparison, good filters and intent labels Priced for teams, and the plan-building step is still yours
Google Search Console Free, and the only true record of what you already rank for Blind to competitors entirely, so it finds coverage gaps but not competitor gaps
Keywordpilot Maps demand, scores intent and difficulty, clusters gaps into assigned pages, from $39/mo founding pricing No backlink index or rank tracking; use Search Console alongside it for performance

Content gap analysis questions

What is a content gap analysis?

A content gap analysis compares what your site covers against what your competitors cover and what your market searches for, then lists the topics you have no page for. The output is a prioritized set of pages to create or improve, ranked by search demand, difficulty and how close the searcher is to buying.

How do you do a content gap analysis?

Pick three to five competitors who genuinely rank for your money terms, pull the keywords each of them ranks for, subtract everything your own site already covers, then filter what remains by intent and winnability. Group the survivors into topics, and each group becomes one page. The subtraction is easy; the filtering is where the value is.

What is the difference between a content gap and a keyword gap?

A keyword gap is the raw list of terms competitors rank for and you do not. A content gap is that list after you have grouped it into topics and decided which need a page. Keyword gap is data, content gap is the plan built from it. Most tools stop at the first one and leave you the second.

What is the best content gap analysis tool?

Ahrefs and Semrush have the deepest competitor keyword indexes, so they are the strongest choice if raw coverage is what you need. If your bottleneck is turning that export into a decision about which eight pages to build this quarter, a tool that clusters and prioritizes saves more time. Keywordpilot is built for that second step.

How often should you run a content gap analysis?

Quarterly for most sites, monthly if you publish weekly or compete in a fast-moving category. Competitors do not add coverage fast enough to justify checking every week, and waiting a full year means you spend two quarters unaware that a rival built a section of the market you ignored.

Can you do a content gap analysis for free?

Partly. Search Console shows queries you get impressions for but rank poorly on, which is a real gap list at no cost, and manually reading competitor sitemaps and top pages finds the obvious holes. What free methods cannot give you is competitor keyword data at scale, so the analysis stays incomplete on the side that matters most.
