You are not researching a keyword, you are researching a dimension

Classic keyword research ends with a decision about one page. Programmatic keyword research ends with a decision about one axis. Is it city? Integration? Currency pair? Job title? File format? Each of those is a column in a dataset, and every row in that column becomes a page. The head term tells you the topic is popular. It tells you nothing about whether the axis underneath it holds up across fifty values, which is the only thing that matters when you are about to commit to a template.

Notice what is missing from that column on the right: nothing says "AI wrote a unique 800 word intro". The differentiator is always a dataset the company already owned or had to go and build.

Scaled content abuse is about value, not about automation

Google's spam policies define scaled content abuse as when "many pages are generated for the primary purpose of manipulating search rankings and not helping users", and list "using generative AI tools or other similar tools to generate many pages without adding value for users" as an example. Read that carefully: the trigger is the missing value, not the generation method. Google's March 2026 core update (which ran from March 27 to April 8, 2026) tightened how consistently that judgment gets applied, and a spam update ran two days before it. The practical effect is that page sets which coasted on template variety alone stopped coasting.

None of that makes programmatic SEO a banned technique. It makes the research step non optional. If you cannot say what a searcher gets on page 300 that they could not get on page 12, you do not have a pattern, you have a paraphrase generator.

Expand the head term into its modifiers

Start with the topic your product sits under and pull the phrases people attach to it. What comes back is a rough map of every axis the market uses: by industry, by city, by integration, by size, by format. Most of them will be dead ends. You are looking for the two or three that repeat with different values.

Score demand across the whole axis, not the head

A single modifier query with 40 searches a month looks worthless in isolation. Sixty of them, all winnable, is a different proposition. Difficulty usually collapses as you move down the axis, which is the entire economic argument for programmatic SEO, and it only shows up when you look at the set.

Cluster by intent and cut what does not fit

Some values on your axis will carry a different intent than the rest.
