For an agency running under 10 client sites, SE Ranking Core at $103.20 a month on annual billing is the most capacity you can buy for the money: 10 projects, 2,000 keywords tracked daily and 100 AI prompts. Ahrefs Lite costs an identical $129 at list price and gives 5 projects and 750 tracked keywords. The catch that decides it for most small shops is not features at all. It is that Core includes exactly one working login, so the day a second strategist joins, the cheap answer stops being cheap.

This is written for agencies between roughly three and ten clients, the band where the pricing models diverge most and where the wrong pick quietly costs a few thousand dollars a year. Every figure below was read off the vendor's own pricing page in August 2026, with the SE Ranking add-on prices re-checked on 29 August 2026. The 20-client version of this analysis, with the full seat maths, sits on our SEO software for agencies comparison. Last updated August 2026.

The $129 collision nobody puts side by side

SE Ranking Core and Ahrefs Lite cost exactly the same list price. That almost never happens cleanly in this category, and it makes the comparison unusually honest, because you are holding money constant and looking only at what comes back.

At $129 a month SE Ranking Core Ahrefs Lite
Client projects 10 5
Keywords tracked 2,000 daily 750
AI prompts tracked 100 daily 5
Working logins included 1 manager seat 1, plus up to 2 more at $40 each
Historical data Project lifetime on Growth; Core is shorter 6 months
Site audit pages a month 250,000 100,000 crawl credits
API 25,000 credits plus MCP access API access and MCP server listed on Lite
Annual price $103.20 a month About $108 a month, roughly 17% off

Twice the projects, roughly 2.7 times the tracked keywords and twenty times the AI prompt allowance, for the same money. On raw capacity it is not close. What Ahrefs sells at that price is a materially better backlink index and a larger US keyword database, which is a real answer to the question rather than a consolation prize: if your pitch depends on link gap analysis, the capacity numbers do not matter much. If your work is keyword research, rank tracking and client reporting, they matter a great deal.

Where the small-agency budget actually breaks

Three things push a small agency past its plan, and they arrive in a predictable order.

The second person. This is the one that surprises people. SE Ranking Core includes one manager seat, and more requires Growth at $223.20 annually, which is a 116% increase to add one colleague. Ahrefs Lite lets you add two seats at $40 each, so a three-person shop pays $209 and stays on the entry plan. For teams of two or three, Ahrefs is the cheaper platform despite giving less of everything else, which inverts the table above completely. Work out your headcount before your feature list.

The eleventh client. Core holds 10 projects. Ahrefs Lite holds 5, and Standard at $249 holds 20. There is nothing between 5 and 20 on Ahrefs, so an agency with 8 clients is either wasting the Standard tier or squeezed on Lite. SE Ranking's 10 and 30 ladder fits the small-agency growth curve considerably better.

The client who wants a login. Neither entry plan solves this. SE Ranking's white label layer is the Agency Pack, which is EUR 59 a month and, importantly, annual billing only, so there is no way to trial it monthly. Ahrefs sells no white labelling at any tier including Enterprise. If branded client access is part of how you sell, budget for it from day one rather than discovering it at renewal.

Should you buy the seat or hire the person?

A question worth asking out loud, because at this size the two decisions are genuinely coupled. A second Ahrefs seat is $40 a month, or $480 a year. A junior strategist who would use it is $50,000 or more. Agencies routinely stall on the $480 while carrying far larger inefficiencies, usually because the software line item is visible and the wasted hours are not.

The honest test is throughput. If one person is doing research for eight clients and reporting is slipping into weekends, the constraint is the person, not the tool, and no plan upgrade fixes it. When that point arrives, most small agencies find that screening and ranking candidates is the step that eats the month rather than the interviewing itself. If instead your one strategist has capacity but keeps hitting a 750-keyword ceiling or a 5-project cap, the constraint really is the plan and the upgrade pays for itself immediately.

What about Semrush and Moz at this size?

Both are worse fits under 10 clients, for opposite reasons.

Semrush Pro at $139.95 holds 5 projects and 500 tracked keywords, which is less than either option above for more money, and its extra seats run about $45 on Pro. Semrush earns its price on advertising, PR and content data breadth. A small SEO-only agency is paying for a lot of surface it will not open.

Moz Pro Standard at $99 is the cheapest headline number here and the most restrictive plan in the category: 150 keyword queries a month, which is about five lookups a day, and 3 campaigns. That works out near $0.66 per keyword lookup, against $0.036 on the $179 Medium tier. The entry plan is roughly 18 times more expensive per query than the tier directly above it, which is an unusual shape and one that catches agencies who chose on price alone. The detail sits on our Moz Pro pricing breakdown.

Best SEO software for small agencies: the short answer

If your agency is Buy Because
One person, 5 to 10 clients SE Ranking Core, $103.20 annually The single seat is not a constraint, and 10 projects with 2,000 daily keywords is the most capacity available at the price
Two or three people, under 5 clients Ahrefs Lite, $129 plus $40 per extra seat The only entry plan that sells additional working logins without a tier jump
Link-led positioning, any size Ahrefs The backlink index is the genuine differentiator and nothing at this price matches it
Clients log into a branded dashboard SE Ranking Growth plus Agency Pack The only research platform that white labels the platform rather than just a PDF, about $282 a month all in
Paid media sits alongside SEO Semrush Pro, $139.95 Weakest SEO capacity per dollar here, but the advertising and PR data has no equivalent

The line item every small agency underestimates

All five platforms above end at the same place: a keyword export. None of them decides which 12 pages a client should publish next quarter, in what order, or which topics that client's domain cannot realistically reach this year. That judgement is still made by a person on a Friday afternoon with a spreadsheet, and for a small agency it is usually the real bottleneck rather than any plan limit.

It is also the part clients pay for. Nobody renews a retainer because the rank tracker had 2,000 keywords in it. They renew because the plan was right. Grouping an export into intent-coherent topic clusters and running several client lists at once through a bulk keyword search volume checker is where the hours go, and it is worth costing that time honestly before optimizing a $30 difference between plans.

For the 20-client scenario with full seat and white label maths, see SEO software for agencies. The head to head on the two platforms above is Ahrefs vs SE Ranking, and the multi-client research workflow itself is on keyword research for agencies.
