SERP Analysis Tool: How to Do SERP Analysis for SEO, Keyword by Keyword
SERP analysis is reading the results page before you write, to find out what Google already decided the query means and whether you can beat what is there. Done by hand it costs about ten minutes a keyword, which is why almost nobody does it across a full list. Type a seed below and Keywordpilot reads intent and difficulty across the whole set at once.

Five readings that decide whether a keyword is worth writing for
A results page is a published answer to the question "what does this searcher want". Google has already tested thousands of variations and settled on the format, depth and page type that satisfies the query. Reading that answer is faster and more reliable than guessing at it. Five things are worth writing down for every keyword you are serious about.
Page type in the top ten
Product pages, category pages, articles, comparison posts, forums, or tools. This is the most decisive reading on the list. If eight of ten results are product pages, Google has classified the query as transactional, and a 3,000 word guide will not rank no matter how good it is.
SERP features taking the space
An AI overview, a featured snippet, a People Also Ask block, a video carousel and four ads can push the first organic result below the fold. The ranking is the same, the traffic is not. Count the features before you value the position.
Depth and structure of what ranks
Not just word count. What subtopics do all of the top results cover, what does each one include that the others do not, and how recently were they updated. The overlap tells you the minimum coverage bar; the differences tell you where the openings are.
Domain strength holding the positions
Ten established sites with deep topical coverage is a different fight from three of those plus seven thin pages and a forum thread. Weak results in a top ten are the clearest buy signal in keyword research, and they are invisible in a difficulty score.
The gap none of them fill
Every results page has one: an outdated set of numbers, a question everybody dodges, a missing price, a use case nobody covers. That gap is your angle, and finding it is the difference between another entrant and a better answer.
Who keeps showing up
Across a full keyword set, the same handful of domains will appear again and again. Those are your search competitors, regardless of who you think you compete with commercially. Their coverage map is the fastest guide to your own.
The domain-strength reading is what a keyword difficulty checker approximates with a single number, and the repeat-domain reading is the starting point for competitor keyword analysis.
▸ How to do a SERP analysis
Four passes, ten minutes a keyword
01
Search it clean
Incognito window, location set to the United States, personalization off. Your logged-in results are shaped by your own history and will show you a friendlier page than a stranger sees. Screenshot the whole first screen, features included.
02
Classify the intent
Read the top ten and name the dominant page type. If the results are mixed, Google is still undecided, and mixed results pages are the easiest ones to enter because no single format has won yet.
03
Audit the content bar
Open the top three. List the subtopics all of them cover, note the publish dates, and record anything that looks stale. That shared outline is the floor your page has to clear before your angle matters.
04
Make the call
Write for it, write for it in a different format, or skip it. Skipping is a real outcome and the one most people never use. A keyword you cannot win at your current site strength is a keyword worth revisiting in six months, not now.
Ten minutes a keyword is fine for twelve keywords and impossible for four hundred, which is the real reason SERP analysis gets skipped. Running the intent and winnability read across a whole set at once is what the bulk keyword research pass is for, and the full method sits on the SEO keyword research pillar.
▸ Reading the results page
What each results page is telling you to build
The pattern in the top ten maps cleanly onto a page type. Most failed pages are not badly written, they are the wrong shape for the query. This table is the translation.
| What dominates the top ten | What Google decided the query means | What you should publish |
|---|---|---|
| Product and pricing pages | The searcher is ready to buy or close to it | A landing page with the product and price visible, not a guide |
| Listicles and roundups | The searcher is comparing options and has not chosen | A comparison page or an honest roundup with a real table |
| How-to articles with steps | The searcher wants to complete a task themselves | A step-by-step article that finishes the job on the page |
| Definitions and glossary entries | The searcher is learning and not yet in market | A short explainer that links onward, or skip it entirely |
| Forums, Reddit threads and Q and A | The searcher wants an unfiltered opinion, not marketing | A page with specifics and honest trade-offs, or leave it alone |
| A mix with no clear winner | Google has not settled the intent yet | The best opportunity on this list: pick a format and go early |
Getting this assignment wrong across a whole site produces the pattern described in keyword search intent, and fixing it usually means remapping rather than rewriting, which is covered in keyword mapping.
▸ Why the difficulty number is not enough
Four things a difficulty score cannot see
Format mismatch
Difficulty scores are built mostly from the backlink profiles of the ranking pages. They have no opinion on whether those pages are shops and yours is an essay. A low score on a transactional query is a trap, not an opening.
Space taken by features
An AI overview plus a People Also Ask block plus shopping units can absorb most of the visible page. The organic competition looks weak because the organic results barely matter for that query.
Topical authority of the holders
A site with two hundred pages on one subject outranks a stronger domain with three. Difficulty scores read domain-level link strength and miss subject-level depth, which is often the deciding factor.
Freshness expectations
Some queries reward recency heavily and others do not care. If every top result was updated in the last ninety days, the query has a freshness requirement, and publishing once and leaving it will not hold a position.
None of this makes difficulty scores useless, it makes them one input. The good keyword difficulty score question has no universal answer for exactly this reason.
▸ Honest comparison
Ways people run SERP analysis
| Approach | Strength | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| By hand in an incognito window | Free, and the most accurate read of what a searcher actually sees | About ten minutes per keyword, so it stops at a dozen terms |
| Ahrefs or Semrush SERP overview | Deep historical data on who ranks, their links and their traffic | Reads position and links; the intent and format call stays yours |
| SERP scraping APIs | Full results at scale for teams who can build on top of raw data | You get rows, not judgments, and someone has to interpret them |
| Keywordpilot | Intent, format and winnability read across a whole keyword set in one pass, from $39/mo founding pricing | No rank tracking or backlink index; pair with Search Console for performance |

SERP analysis questions
What is SERP analysis?
SERP analysis is the process of reading the search results page for a keyword to work out what Google thinks the query means and what it would take to rank there. You look at the page types in the top ten, the SERP features occupying space, the depth and angle of the content, and the strength of the domains holding position. The output is a decision: write for this term, write for it differently, or skip it.
How do you do a SERP analysis?
Search the keyword in an incognito window set to the United States, then record five things: the dominant page type in the top ten, the SERP features present, the average depth and structure of the ranking pages, the domain strength of those results, and the gap none of them fill. Those five readings answer whether the keyword is winnable and what the page has to contain. It takes about ten minutes per keyword by hand.
Why is SERP analysis important?
Because keyword difficulty scores measure backlinks, and results pages are decided by intent. A term with a difficulty of 12 is unwinnable if every result is a product page and you plan to publish an article. SERP analysis catches that mismatch before you write, which is the single most common reason a technically well-optimized page never ranks.
What is the best tool for SERP analysis?
For the raw data on who ranks and why, Ahrefs and Semrush have the deepest indexes. For reading intent and content requirements across a whole keyword set at once, a tool built on that step is faster, because the bottleneck is rarely getting the data, it is interpreting three hundred results pages. Keywordpilot runs the intent and difficulty read across an entire cluster in one pass, from $39 a month on founding pricing.
What are SERP features?
SERP features are the results that are not standard blue links: featured snippets, AI overviews, People Also Ask boxes, local packs, image and video carousels, shopping units, and knowledge panels. They matter because they take clicks and vertical space. A query with an AI overview, a video carousel and four ads leaves the first organic result far down the page, which changes the traffic a number-one ranking is actually worth.
How do you analyze SERP competitors?
Look at the pages that rank, not the brands you consider rivals. For each result in the top ten, note the domain, the page type, the publish or update date, the word count, and what the page does that yours would not. Sites that appear repeatedly across your keyword set are your real search competitors, and they are frequently not the companies your sales team names.
